Great Bear Pamphlets

The Great Bear Pamphlets were a series of staple-bound pamphlets distributed by Dick Higgins' legendary Something Else Press in the late sixties and early seventies. They included writings and scores from artists involved with Fluxus, Happenings, Audio Art and the Concrete Poetry communities. Titles include George Brecht's "Chance Imagery", John Cage's "Diary: Change the World (You Will Only Make Matters Worse)" and a reprint of Luigi Russolo's seminal text "The Art of Noise".

Other artists include Robert Filliou, Claes Oldenburg, Allan Kaprow, Jackson Mac Low, Emmett Williams, Alison Knowles, Dieter Rot(h) and Al Hansen. Unavailable since the mid-seventies these pamphlets command anywhere from $15 to $150 on the secondary market, depending on the issue. Ubuweb (www.ubu.com) made them available again online recently, but for those who prefer paperstock Primary Information, a new NYC non-profit, has just issued a box set of facsimile reprints, complete with new texts from Higgins' family members Alison Knowles, Jessica Higgins and Fluxus historian Hannah Higgins. Pre-order price is one hundred dollars for the complete set of twenty, which come housed in a handmade pine box. These are key documents of the 60's avant garde.
